iPhone running on empty? Recharge with an old book

 Recharge with an old book!!

As more and more people turn to e-books and tablets for their reading needs, there are stacks of books gathering dust on shelves, or even worse, being tossed into the trash (for shame!). Thankfully, one California couple is out to rescue these neglected and unappreciated treasures.

Richard and Brenna Neeley from Cerritos, Calif., take old and vintage books, as well as some new ones, and convert them into charging docks for iOS devices. Each dock is handmade to order and features a power cord (wall adapter not included) threaded through the book, with a slot on the front cover to dock your iPhone or iPod.

The Book Charging docks are available through the couple's Etsy store, with prices ranging from $45 to $55. There's also an iPad dock for $72 and a iPhone/iPad combo model for $85.

I still love paper books, and I would rather see old ones being donated to libraries or schools. Still, I can't deny that the docks are quite beautiful.

Brenna Neeley, who majored in comparative literature, notes on the couple's Etsy profile, "Our goal is to bring more books into your life, even if it's just so that you see it daily and are reminded of how wonderful a book can be. Maybe you'll be inspired to read that book you've been meaning to."

Samsung's Super Bowl ad: Farrelly brother, Apple-baiting?

Might there be some brand new Samsung product hanging from Cameron Diaz's hair during the Super Bowl?

I ask this apparently spurious question because Samsung's Twitter feed has been glistening with tease about its forthcoming Super Bowl spot.

First the company tweeted: "We're telling fans first: Next Sunday we launch a device so revolutionary only an ad in America's biggest game can do it justice."

A mere hour later, its more than 333,000 faithful were stroked and stoked with: "To make our first ever SB ad as noteworthy as the #GalaxyNote itself, it will be one of the longest in the game. Look for it in Q4."

So this is the launch of the Galaxy Note? I must confess that I found a certain pleasure in placing the Note in my hands during CES. It was the only handheld device to which I returned. This might be something to do with the fact that I have large hands and am double-jointed.

The question is whether the company will again choose to bait Apple with another of its "Next Big Thing Is Here" offering.

This campaign has at least registered (unlike so much tech advertising) in the way it has managed to portray Apple fanboys as sweetly sheep-like and sad.

The question is just how much Apple might be baited. For Samsung's final tweet this evening read: "Sunday is our 1st ever SB... So we tapped legendary director Bobby Farrelly (http://smgm.us/w03) for his first ever commercial. Excited?"

I am sure that you won't eat between now and when the last field goal that goes wide right.

Farrelly is half of the directing duo behind "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber." So what kind of comedic heights--and simultaneous depths--might Samsung be probing in order to create its revolution?

Odd choice of word, that. One of Steve Jobs' favorites. What might this long, long Super Bowl ad offer in terms of earth-shattering gadget-reassessment? Or might there simply be more laughter at Apple fanboys sitting in line, wrapped in blankets, with their tiny, gloveless hands frozen to their iPads?

NEC to cut 10,000 jobs as iPhone continues assault on Japan

NEC to cut 10,000 jobs as iPhone continues assault on Japan

Japan's NEC will cut nearly one in ten of its workers, as the iPhone continues to gobble up the market for smartphones.

The company said this week that recent poor performance was owing to the popularity of the Apple device in Japan, an increase in the number of foreign rivals it faces in the IT infrastructure market, and trouble expanding beyond its home country, Reuters reported.

NEC forecast a loss of $1.3 billion (100 billion yen) for the year ending March 31, and said about 7,000 of the 10,000 eliminated jobs will be in Japan, with the company taking a $520 billion restructuring charge.

Most of the cuts, which may begin March 31, will be from NEC's mobile phone business and will include both full- and part-time positions, Bloomberg reported. The company had 115,840 workers at the end of March, meaning the cuts equal about 8.6 percent of NEC's workforce.

In the three months ended Dec. 31, NEC said, the company's loss widened to $1.13 billion, from $345.43 million a year ago, with sales dropping 6.7 percent to $8.76 billion.

Despite a slow start in Japan, Apple's iPhone picked up steam there in 2010, increasingly winning the hearts of people in a country that had long produced dominant devices in the market for cutting-edge consumer electronics.

Apple was the top smartphone vendor worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to Strategy Analytics, though Samsung was tops for the year.
