SlySoft Cracks Blu-ray DRM
SlySoft is the vendor of DRM hacks. SlySoft released an enhancement to AnyDVD HD program that purports to crack the encryption of Blu-ray discs. The original AnyDVD HD cracked the AACS DRM encryption used on HD DVD discs.
Lime Wire Opens DRM Free Music Store
Lime Wire opened its long-promised legit music store. It claims a selection of about half a million tracks, all from independent labels. The subscription plans offer a maximum number of downloads per month at a set price; all are DRM-free MP3 files that the subscriber can keep indefinitely.
The second interesting aspect of Lime Wire's foray into direct revenue from music is that it begs the question of whether the major labels, now that they accept DRM-free permanent downloads -- will ever license their music into monthly subscription download plans like those of Lime Wire and eMusic.
Adobe Releases DRM for FLV Downloads
Adobe has released Flash Media Rights Management Server, a DRM server for the Flash and H.264 video formats. The Adobe Flash Video DRM Server runs on Windows and Linux OS.
Flash is the only major digital video download format that, until now, has not had a DRM technology available. The product introduction shows the importance that video content owners still attach to DRM.
Flash Media DRM Server supports download-to-own as well as time-limited content licensing. Licenses are tied to users, not hardware. The DRM server integrates with standard user identity management schemes such as LDAP and Microsoft Active Directory. Microsoft's Silverlight includes DRM specifically for video content, so the new Adobe technology serves as a checklist item for comparisions between AIR and Silverlight.
Consumer Attitudes Souring Towards DRM
EMR released the results of a study of the digital media market in the UK. The number of respondents who agreed that "the fuss about DRM will die down as music consumers get used to the idea" stayed the same as last year, at 42%, while those who disagreed with that statement were 34%, down slightly from 36% last year.
Consumer education on what DRM is more necessary than ever: 33% of respondents at least "know something about it". The percentage of people who agreed that DRM is a "good idea because protects copyrighted content from illegal file sharers" has dropped from last year's 61% to 49%.
The only truly bright spot in this survey for DRM proponents: whereas 61% of last year's respondents agreed that DRM "invades the rights of the music consumer to hear their music on different platforms," and 18% disagreed, this time only 49% agreed and 29% disagreed with a similar assertion.
